Sri Lanka all set to build $300 million world-class beach park in Colombo

The Sri Lankan government has decided to build a world-class beach park from Kollupitiya to Dehiwela in the capital city Colombo at a cost of $300 million (around INR 47.8 billion). Nihal Rupasinghe, Megapolis and Western Province Development Ministry Secretary, said that the cabinet of ministers has given their approval for the project. Under this costly project, about 85 hectares of beach land will be reclaimed through landfill.
As per the ministry secretary, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has been asked to prepare a feasibility report in six months time before starting this ambitious project. Besides, an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study also is in progress. Both the Coast Conservation Department and the Finance Ministry’s National Planning Department have given their approval.

Project Director D.E.C.Jayakody mentioned, “This artificial beach will complement the port city project. This will create a world class beach with numerous leisure activities and is expected to attract thousands of visitors”. In addition, the project will also have special breakwater systems to control the water levels and to make the sea safe for visitors, especially for swimmers.
Mr. Jayakody also said that once all the study is done, international bids will be called by next year in January for the development of the artificial beach. “We hope to have the landfill completed within one and half years,” he added.

It is being said that the whole region will be able to accommodate around 50,000 people at any time. Besides, there will be a parking space for 3,000 vehicles.
