Sipan, the largest Elaphiti Island, is a very popular day trip option from Dubrovnik. It is a short ferry ride away from the city. The ferry takes about an hour and a half to reach there. You can go there by car too. On reaching there, the town is best experienced on bikes, which can easily be rented, from booths across the harbour. Sipan is well known for its wine and extremely laid-back attitude. In the early 15th century Sipan was popular as a holiday destination among the rich and many people got palaces and holiday homes built there. Therefore, it is not surprising that a 16th century castle—of the wealthy Stijepović-Skočibuha family from Dubrovnik—is the architectural highlight of this small town. Next to it is a tall tower built in 1577 as a protection against an attack from the pirates. Other than that, tourists flock to the Gothic Rector's Palace and the ruins of Archbishop's Palace still stand strong. The most important historical sight is the Church of the Holy Spirit, which dates back to 1577. Go to Sipan to enjoy tranquility and to devour the freshest seafood you will ever find anywhere. When you get tired of exploring, lay on the pristine beaches and enjoy the sound of crashing waves.
