Shree Shankara Narayan Temple

The demon known as Khara was blessed with special powers from Lord Shiva. He could turn his enemies in to ashes by simply placing his hand over their head. He started abusing his powers and became a great risk to even the gods. Sensing an impending danger, Lord Vishnu (the strategist) took an avatar of an extremely seductive woman named Mohini—the avatar was blessed with mystic powers from Lord Shiva too. She eventually managed to have Khara place his hand over his own head and destroy himself in the process. Shiva was happy with the outcome and is said to have embraced Mohini.
This temple, not too far from Venkataramana Temple demonstrates oneness and formlessness of God. The idol of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (in Mohini's avatar) come together with a message that there is no difference between Hari (Vishnu or Narayan) and Hara (Shiva or Shankara). Since the form of man and woman merge in the idol here, the deity at this temple is aptly christened as Ardha-Nareshwara. The premises of this temple may be locked during afternoon hours.
