Belgium is a gem of a place for all partygoers and, of course, beer loving people. It’s one of those places that boast of a very vibrant pub and bar culture as well. Also, it’s one of the world’s best countries for beer lovers.

But did you know that there is one place in Belgium, where you will have to deposit your shoes to enjoy a glass of beer. It seems that it’s not only the beer that people here are after, but beer glasses too, and there has been an alarming trend of souvenir hunting (aka glass stealing) for a while now. This has become a worrisome trend, with the pub owners fed up with the same.To tackle the same, some bars have started taking steps to ensure the safety of their precious glassware, —the cost of some can go up to 50 Euros a piece!

While some have started using beer glasses that are protected against theft by securing them with an electronic anti-theft tag to each glass, Dulle Griet in Ghent came up with an innovative idea. Here, if you want to enjoy a drink of beer, you will have to deposit your shoe as collateral. When you are done with guzzling down beer, you will be united with your shoes, just like Cinderella.
Apparently, after depositing their shoes, people have walked barefoot, but so far, no one has tried to walk into the bar without shoes. Do note that when it comes to shoes, Dulle Griet doesn’t discriminate, as they accept all kinds of shoes. However, Dulle Grient’s owner Alex Vriendt added that a flip-flop is not as valuable as the beer glass.
When the customers surrender their shoes, the footwear goes in a basket that hangs from the ceiling. And trust us, people don’t mind depositing their shoes for a good glass of beer.
