Just bordering the Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a little town in the Malnad area, about 150 km to the Northwest of Mysore. However, it is known more the magnificent coffee plantations that pack the hills and valleys in the area. It is a wonderful experience to wind your way through the countryside flanked by the thick, dark green plants growing under the shade of tall trees around which pepper and other vines grow in abundance. Interspersed between these are little streams and endearing waterfalls. There are many trekking and nature routes, opportunities for camping and other adventure activities. Just outside Sakleshpur, approached by a flight of about 200 steps is the Manjirabad Fort built by Tipu Sultan as a defensive fort with spectacular views of the Western Ghats.
