It is 117 km away from the city of Sofia but the two are extremely well connected via public transport. The monastery is located amid the idyllic Rila mountains, at an altitude of 1174 m. The drive is a gorgeous one, which takes visitors through Bulgaria’s countryside and lush pine forests.
Rila Monastery occupies pride of place in the list of Bulgarian UNESCO Heritage Sites due to its impressive frescoes and intricate architecture. Make sure you have your arms and knees covered when you visit Rila Monastery. Alternatively carry a scarf or sarong with you. It’s easy to spend an entire day exploring the monastery and its surroundings. Take your time to pore over the colourful murals, which will leave you spellbound. When you’re hungry hop over to the bakery inside the premises of the monastery to sample some traditional Bulgarian bread. Walk to the museum and the Ivan Rilski cave before you return to Sofia.
