Rewa Kund, set amid green landscape, is 5 km away from the village of Mandu. Along the way, you’d cross myriad historical edifices but we’d recommend you visit Baz Bahadur’s Palace before tourist buses crowd the place. By cycle you’d reach this place within 20 minutes.
The tragic love story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Rupmati is still sung by the bards of Mandu. Baz Bahadur was the last independent Sultan of Malwa, who was deeply in love with Rupmati, a Rajput singer, whose beauty was famous throughout the region. In 1561 AD, Mughal Emperor Akbar sent his army under Adham Khan to capture Mandu. The armies of Malwa were no match to the Mughal might and the fort fell to the invaders. Baz Bahadur fled to Mewar, instead choosing to fight till death, leaving Rupmati behind. To escape the dishonour of falling into the hands of the invaders, Rupmati committed suicide by swallowing powdered diamond.
