If Borobudur is the place for sunrise, then head to Prambanan, located just 17 km away from Jogja, for sunset. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 9thcentury, is one of the largest Hindu temples dedicated to the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It was believed that there were about 240 temples here at one time, but most of them are in ruins today. The main group of temples, dedicated to the trinity, stands restored and the vimana or the tower of the Shiva temple reaches a height of 154 feet. Several legends echo from these temples, including the one that suggests that the idol of Lord Shiva is modelled on the local king Balintung as locals worship their kings as gods. The other folktale suggests that the idol of Durga is inspired from one of the local princesses, Loro Jonggrang.
