Rio San Juan is where nature and history meet—a forgotten island oasis that teems with wildlife, yet largely ignored by tourists. It is here where you will find the city of San Carlos boasting excellent restaurants and interesting places. Also in here are wildlife refuges and the incredible Solentiname Islands. Discovering this area by boat or kayak is the way to experience all that Rio San Juan has to offer. The region of Sabalos offers private natural reserves and hotels located right on the water, whereas the picturesque town of El Castillo offers breathtaking architecture and an old colonial fort. Reach here by bus from Managua or cut the journey in half by hiring a private car or by boat from Granada. While in the area make sure to visit the popular art colony of Solentiname where the islands boast scarlet sunsets. Another popular attraction here is Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge where jaguars, turtles, monkeys, snakes, birds and more live. Though one of the most missed places in the country, Rio San Juan is most definitely worth a visit.
