This intricate mix of Renaissance and Gothic architecture lies just off the old port and was built in early 16th century as the entry point for all trade voyages in the Dubrovnik republic. The central courtyard was used as a trading centre and a meeting place for businessmen from all over. What started as a custom’s house where traded goods were taxed was later transformed into the mint, the state treasury, and the bank. Eventually, the palace was used as a melting pot for all the educated citizens of Dubrovnik who would meet in the courtyard to discuss literary and scientific materials and advancements. It’s the only building to have survived the devastating earthquake of 1667 that wiped out most of the then Dubrovnik, and thus gives us a glimpse into the style of lavish architecture that prevailed in the city before it was brought to ground by natural calamities.Today the palace, with an impressive façade, houses what many consider as the most important historical documentation of Dubrovnik—the archive. It also serves as the site for the opening ceremony of the world renowned Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Owing to its beautiful architecture and deep-rooted historical relevance to the city, Sponza palace is a must visit attraction for tourists as well as locals. Recently it has been used for wedding ceremonies and photo shoots.
