A regular trip to Sikkim comprises of essentials that are Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi, Yumthang and Nathu La. But then, there is so much more to this state that these places would feel just like the tip of a massive iceberg. If you have an offbeat trip to Sikkim on mind, this read is all that you need. Apart from all the lesser known famous, we also have an en route suggestion for the Gurudongmar Lake, for this is one famous place that still sees lesser tourists.
Dzongu
The village of Dzongu lies at a drive of around 2 hours from Gangtok. The drive in itself is intriguing, and just the right way to start your trip to Sikkim. Away from the city, you will have River Teesta accompanying you to Dzongu, where it becomes the wild river that it is sans any dams. This place is nothing like Gangtok or any of the bigger cities, and is more of a place from Enid Blyton’s tales. You can stay at one of the few homestays; with some luck, you will also have some stunning views of Mt Kanchendzonga. Your internet and phone connection will probably snap here; and all that you should do here is go on short trails, visit the local monastery, have a picnic at the riverside, dunk in the hot fountain pools, and stargaze at night. A few longer treks can also be done from here.
What adds more to the rustic charm of the place is the fact that is wedged right by the Kanchendzonga National Park and has a very vibrant biodiversity.
Goecha La Trek
One for the more adventurous souls. If you love strapping your hiking boots on and are up for an adventure of a lifetime, Goecha La Trek is just what you need. You will need around a week for this; get ready for rhododendron groves, views from Dzongri, the barrenness at Lamuney, the Goecha Lake and, of course, the huge possibility of looking at Kanchendzonga from close quarters. The trek starts from Yuksom and is quite a tough one as well, but the views that you have en route are the best incentive you can expect from any trek.
Lachen & Lachung
You can visit both Lachen and Lachung while on your way to Gurudongmar Lake. We suggest that you stay at Lachen after starting from Gangtok for Gurudongmar. This place is more of an hamlet, surrounded with conifer forests. Lachen also has a Buddhist monastery that makes for an interesting visit. Spend a day here before you set your eyes on the lake; on your way back, you can visit Lachung as well. This village also has a very quaint feel to it and looks like a charm in winters, heavy snow decking up its lanes. You can also move to Yumthang Valley from Lachung as it lies further up this route.
Gurudongmar Lake
There is little explaining the charm of this one. A huge water body of stark blue water at a height of 17800 ft in the Himalayas is sure to blow your mind away. Its first sight, like that of Pangong, will have you giddy with delight. The surrounding region of this lake is home to blue sheer, yaks, and other wildlife of high-altitude. It holds a special place of reverence with the Buddhist and other communities around.
Hee Bermiok
You can access Hee Bermiok via Pelling for a getaway unlike any. It is a delight for those into bird-watching, for the region has more than 60 varieties of bird species. A perfect sub-tropical Himalayan destination, Hee Bermiok will keep you busy with option of biking, short hikes, Chayatal Lake, Pheng Dogi Falls, and even a trek to Barsey, Sikkim’s rhododendron capital. You can have a quaint, calm stay at one of the many homestays that have come up here.
Uttarey
At just 30 km from Pelling, Uttarey is almost a secret hideaway in Sikkim. You will get to cross Singshore, the highest bridge in Asia, on your way. While there is not much to do or see in Uttarey, apart from a local monastery and a waterfall, nature lovers can have a gala time here. Those interested can also visit a trout farm that lies on the way to Mainebass waterfall. Uttarey has just a few homestays and budget hotels, so reserve a place in time if you have it on your mind.
