Oldest mosques in the world; find out which one is in India
Did you know there are over 3.6 million mosques worldwide? These sacred spaces represent Muslim identity and heritage. Here, we will explore some of the oldest mosques globally, offering insights into Islamic spirituality and travel destinations.
Masjid Al Haram
Commonly known as the Kaaba or The Great Mosque of Makkah, it holds the distinguished title of being the world's oldest mosque. This revered site, where Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail (peace be upon them both) prayed, is revered as the holiest of holy sites in Islam. Muslims from across the world turn towards the Qiblah direction of the Kaaba five times a day in their prayers, affirming its status as the first house for humanity, erected for the worship of Allah, the One God. Over the centuries, Masjid Al Haram underwent numerous reconstructions, notably in 1571 by the Ottomans and later in the late 20th century by the Saudis, with ongoing expansions initiated since 2010.
Al-Aqsa Mosque
Situated in Jerusalem and constructed in 705 AD, it holds immense importance in Islam. It ranks as the third holiest site in Islam. It was at Al-Aqsa Mosque that Prophet Muhammad prayed on the Night of Mirage. The term Al-Aqsa typically denotes the entire Temple Mount compound, which is viewed as a single mosque. This compound should not be mistaken for the silver-domed congregational mosque or prayer hall facing Mecca, often called Al-Aqsa Mosque in English and also known as Al-Qibli Mosque.
Quba Mosque
Built by Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE, possibly as referenced as the "Mosque founded on piety since the first day" in the Quran, holds a significant place in Islamic history. It was constructed by Prophet Muhammad and his companions after migrating to Madinah in 622 CE (1 AH) and hosted the first Friday prayer. With a capacity of over 20,000 worshippers, Quba Mosque features four parallel minarets, 56 mini domes, three central cooling areas, and numerous entrances. Its significance is understood if you refer to Prophet Muhammad's statement that whoever purifies themselves at home and then prays at Quba Mosque will receive rewards akin to an Umrah pilgrimage.
Masjid al-Nabawi
Established by Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE, is the second-largest mosque in the world and the largest mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Commonly known as the Prophet’s Mosque, it covers 8.67 square meters of land and has a capacity to accommodate more than 10 lakh worshippers. Serving as the second holiest site in Islam after Masjid Al Haram, it houses Prophet Muhammad's tomb within what was initially his and his wife Aisha's house. Masjid al-Nabawi underwent substantial reconstruction in the late 20th century while retaining the earlier Ottoman construction at its core, including the landmark green dome atop the prophet's mausoleum.
Masjid al-Qiblatain
Also known as the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, it holds a sacred place in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Built in 623 CE, it commemorates the moment when Prophet Muhammad received the revelation to change the direction of Qibla from Masjid al-Aqsa to the Holy Kaaba. Masjid al-Qiblatain can accommodate approximately 2,000 worshippers and is the only mosque with two Mihrabs (prayer niches). Its exterior features traditional motifs and elements, with a spacious prayer hall.
The Great Mosque of Sanaa
Known as Al-Jami al-Kabir bi-Sana, stands as one of the oldest mosques globally, situated in Sanaa, Yemen. Built in the early Islamic years, it underwent several renovations over the centuries, with its architectural features showcasing delicate stucco work, wooden ceilings, and intricate patterns. Recognized for its historical and cultural significance, the Great Mosque of Sanaa was included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Mosque of the Companions
Also known as Masjid as-Sahabah, holds the distinction of being the oldest Muslim place of worship in Africa. Built in Massawa, Eritrea, in 613 CE, it was constructed by Muslims fleeing from Makkah to escape persecution by the Quraysh, following the first pledge of Aqabah. Featuring simple yet classic architecture, the Mosque of the Companions includes four beautiful minarets, a Mihrab (prayer niche), and a small dome, covering an area of 3,100 square meters.
Mezquita
Also known as the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, it stands as one of the oldest mosques in the southern region of Spain, Europe. Originally a church, it served as a shared prayer space for Christians and Muslims before being transformed into a mosque in 784 CE. Today, Mezquita is a popular tourist destination in Spain, showcasing unique architectural elements and historical significance.
Cheraman Juma Masjid
Constructed under the directives of Cheraman Perumal, then ruler of present-day Kerala, by Malik bin Dinar, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, this mosque stands as the oldest in the Indian subcontinent.
