St. John in the Wilderness church

The church of St. John in the wilderness is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj. Nestled in a copse of mighty Deodar trees, the church is rather aptly named, and even today, is an island of wilderness in a rapidly growing tourist destination. The church was built in 1852, to provide a place of worship for the British soldiers posted here, and the church is full of memorial stones of those who passed away here. One memorial speaks of death due to a bear attack, while the most impressive one is just behind the church. It is dedicated to Lord Elgin, the Viceroy of India from 1862-1863. The church also boasts of two magnificent stained glass panels, and a bell, cast by Mears and Stainbank, and brought all the way from England!

The church of St. John in the Wilderness is located just before McLeod Ganj on the road from Dharamsala. It is within walking distance of the main market and the bus stop.

The church is open from 7 am to 6 pm on all days. Services are held on Sunday mornings.
