The Kangra Fort is one of the oldest forts in India, and has a history going back centuries. Built by the Katoch Kings, who trace their lineage back to the goddess Ambika, Kangra Fort was also the capital of Raja Parmanand Chandra, better known as Porus, whose clash with Alexander the Great is something we all have read about, in our history books. Located atop a hill at the confluence of two rivers, the gorge around the hillock provides a natural moat for the fort, further strengthening it, and rendering it difficult to capture. The fort remained invincible till Mahmud of Ghazni invaded, and carried away much of the wealth of the fort, and the temple inside. Today, the temple has no idol of Ambika, but has one of Mahavir, considered to be one of his oldest ones, and is a place of pilgrimage for Jains. One of the best things about the Kangra Fort is the superb audio guide, which makes the fort and its stories come alive.
