Markha Valley Trek, a great way to experience Ladakhi culture and wildlife

The Markha Valley Trek is a popular hiking route in Ladakh. You can call this trek an extreme adventure because of the nature of the trek. The trek takes approximately eight to ten days to complete and covers a distance of about 120 km, in some of the most rugged landscapes in India.

You can start the trek from Chilling. The trail will take you through beautiful landscapes, remote villages and high mountain passes, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Along the way, you will get to see the unique culture and lifestyle of the Ladakhi people, who are known for their hospitality, simplicity, and Buddhist traditions.
Did you know that a significant part of the Markha Valley lies within the Hemis National Park? It’s because of this that visitors are required to get permits from the park authorities to enter and explore the area. You will be in the largest national parks in India.


The Markha Valley trek, because of its high-altitude landscape, is also a great chance to witness the unique wildlife of Ladakh. If lucky, you may get to see the elusive and extremely rare snow leopard. Other species such as the Tibetan wolf, and Eurasian brown bear also call the region home.


The highest point of the trek is the Kongmaru La pass, which stands at an elevation of around 5,200 meters above sea level. The trek requires a moderate level of physical fitness, as the altitude can be challenging, and the terrain can be rocky and steep at times. However, it is considered to be one of the most rewarding treks in India, with stunning natural scenery, cultural experiences, and a sense of adventure.
