Auroville in Puducherry will teach you the quiet and peaceful ways of living

We are quick to think of Puducherry for a peaceful holiday. But ever wondered why? The French Quarter, as popular as it is, always has visitors thronging the cafes and restaurants. Where is the peace and quiet? One wonders… However, if you travel almost 40 minutes away from the bustling French Quarter, you will come to Auroville, the real peaceful corner of the town.

Auroville was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, also known as "The Mother", as an experimental community focused on spiritual, cultural, and environmental harmony, and it has since grown to become a unique international city with a population of around 2,500 people from over 50 countries (and counting). This unique city was designed by architect Roger Anger.


My first visit to Auroville was on a school excursion, back in 2002-2003. Back then, the famous Matrimandir was still under construction. We got a sneak-peek of what was inside the dome, but my young mind captured only what it wanted to capture – the shiny golden dome!


It was only after visiting Auroville as an adult did I understand the meaning and the purpose of Auroville, that is, a place of unity and peace where people from all over the world can live together in harmony, regardless of nationality, religion, or culture.



The community is based on the principles of human unity, spiritual progress, and sustainable living. It has no political or religious affiliations, and aims to be a place where people can work towards a common goal of creating a better world. The community is managed by the Auroville Foundation, which is supported by the Government of India and UNESCO.


For those who find alternative lifestyles appealing, Auroville is a great place. One of the main reasons why Auroville is such a popular tourist destination is because of its unique community and philosophy. Don’t forget the design too!
