The buses will accommodate 30 women passengers and only women will be allowed to travel in these buses. The route of the buses will cover the major areas of Navi Mumbai and other regions of the state.
As of now, NMMT along with providing services in Navi Mumbai, its buses will also ply to Mumbai, Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan, Mira Bhayander, Panvel and Uran.
Municipal commissioner Ramaswamy N said, “The state government has under the Tejaswini scheme given a grant of Rs2.5 crore to the NMMC for the purchase of special buses for women. The NMMT has purchased 10 buses, each costing Rs25 lakh, from the grant received.”
As expected, the 10 new buses will run as ladies special just like the ladies special train. This initiative will help in curbing women harassment cases and will also ensure safety of women travelling at wee hours or anytime.
