Nandi Hills, also known as Nandidurg, is a popular tourist destination located at a distance of 60 km from Bengaluru. It is situated in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. Many interesting legends are associated with the origin of the name Nandi Hills. One such folklore states that Nandi Hills got its name from the ancient Dravidian temple located on the hilltop, dedicated to Nandi bull. Nandi is believed to be the mount of Lord Shiva. During the reign of Chola dynasty, it was famous as Ananda Giri which means ‘hill of happiness’. Another story is believed to be associated with Yoga Nandeeshwara who performed penance here. A temple is located on the hilltop around which a fort was built by the chieftains of Chikkaballapur, which was later strengthened by Tipu Sultan. This now ruined fort was considered a secured point for soldiers to shoot in any direction without being seen. It is also believed that the place has been named after the hills which resemble the shape of a sleeping bull.
