We get to see so many products out there in the store, or are being innovated every other day, but it’s also important to note that the majority of all innovation projects fail. This is where this museum comes into play, as it showcases these failures to offer visitors a fascinating learning experience.
Here, every item provides a different insight into the risky business of innovation. The museum has been curated by Doctor Samuel West, who is a licensed psychologist, and has a PhD in Organizational Psychology.
West added, "Seeing these massive corporations fail when they try something new or experiment, it kind of also gives us permission to fail when we try out new things."
As innovation and progress also require an acceptance of failure, this museum aims to stimulate productive discussion about failure and to inspire people to take meaningful risks.
The Museum of Failure exhibition, which has travelled the world, features more than 100 failed innovations. West says, these companies or these did something that didn't work out, and that they tried to learn from it.
There is even a wall where visitors can share their failures, or write helpful reminders for them to follow.
West reassures, "We need to take meaningful risks. It's not just these companies that need to do that. We have to do it on a personal level. If we want to develop as individuals in our relationships and just about anything that's meaningful to us, we have to be willing to take these risks."
