Mumbai airport shuts down again after heavy rain on Monday

After resuming operations on Friday evening, the Mumbai International Airport was shut down again on the morning of Monday, July 8, due to heavy rains.
A Mumbai Airport (MIAL) Spokesperson informed the press that owing to the heavy monsoon showers, there is no flight movement at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. The flight operations were reportedly stalled from 9:12 AM to 9:31 AM, but were soon restarted after a delay of 20 minutes for every scheduled flight departure.


While British Airways' flight BA135 had to be landed at the Hyderabad Airport, SpiceJet SG8701 had to make a landing at the Ahmedabad Airport due to the suspension of operations at Mumbai Airport. There were no flight cancellations reported though.

A few days back, the main runway of Mumbai Airport was shut down after a SpiceJet flight from Jaipur skidded off the runway during landing and got stuck on grassy land. Although another runway of the airport took the lead, it could not help cancellation, delays and diversion of flight operations.

Mumbai experienced the heaviest rainfall of the season on July 2, which not only affected the road, rail, and air traffic, but also claimed the lives of several people due to a building mishap in Kurar village.
