Bengaluru is ‘world's most traffic congested city’, 3 other Indian cities too in the top list

So it’s official now! Bengaluru has grabbed the number one spot in the list of ‘World’s Most Traffic Congested City’ for the year 2019. The report was released by Tom Tom, a Netherlands-based leading in-vehicle navigation firm. In its yearly Traffic Index, the company covered 416 cities across 57 countries on six continents. The company provides an insight into both real-time and historical data and then ranks urban congestion across the globe.

Though Bengaluru topped the chart, there are three other Indian cities in the top 10 list, namely Mumbai at fourth, Pune at fifth and New Delhi eighth position.
The global firm which is in ninth edition of its annual Traffic Index said, “Bengaluru takes the top spot this year with drivers in the southern Indian city expecting to spend an average of 71% extra travel time stuck in traffic."

According to the live tracking system, the city has currently 291 traffic jams running up to 145.7 km. Last year in 2019, a commuter had to spend an additional 243 hours in traffic while driving during peak hours. On 6 April, the city recorded the least traffic and the highest on 20 August at 103 per cent congestion.
The worst rush hours, according to the report, are on Fridays between 7 PM and 8 PM. and those travelling after 8 PM on Friday could save nearly 5 hours per year (for a 30 minute commute).

The report also mentioned what people could have done in those hours spent in traffic on roads. They could have planted 244 trees, watched 215 episodes of Game of Thrones or covered 139 football matches!

Next in the list on second spot was Manila in the Philippines.
