Photo opportunity at an iconic Madrid location – located in the centre of Madrid, Puerta del Sol was one of the city gates of Madrid in 15th century. The name ‘Gate of the Sun’ came from the rising sun which decorated the entry as it was facing the east. A plaque ‘Kilometre 0’ indicate that all the radial roads across Spain begin from here. Puerta del Sol contains famous clock whose bells mark the beginning of a new year. The red brick building of Casa de Correos is one of the striking structures lining the plaza. The centre of the square contains a statue of King Carlos III looking onto the Casa de Correos. The highlight of the square is bronze sculpture of 'The Bear and the Strawberry Tree.' This is a quintessential symbol of Madrid. The bear eating the tree symbolizes the abundance of animals and trees around Madrid since the middle ages. This is where citizens used to gather to receive the ‘breaking news’ back in the days. Hang out at the heart of Madrid and admire the beauty of this centre, which has been buzzing since medieval times. This is a perfect place to take selfie with ‘El Oso y el Madroño,’ and send it home to your friends.
