Endearingly called the Skyscraper Building, the Le Monnier Mansion is just a four-storey building located at the corner of St. Peter and Royal Streets. When it was built in the late 19th century, it was supposedly the tallest building in the French Quarter and hence the name. But quite apart from this distinction, it also has strong literary association. It was here that writer George Washington Cable lived and wrote some of his most popular works, which explored the life and culture of mixed-race Creole class, racism, and relations among various communities during the late 19th century and early 20th century New Orleans. He advocated racial equality and was frequently attacked for his views.
