Kuldiga

Often called Latvian Venice, this perfectly preserved medieval town in the western part of the country is well worth exploring even though the castle is long gone. The town is virtually unchanged; one can still see centuries-old wooden buildings complete with red clay roofs, cobbled streets and a river that flows through the town. Don’t miss the small waterfalls at the centre of the town, either catch the sunrise in the winter or take a dip with the locals in the summer. Kuldiga District Museum is also worth visiting. Recently renovated, the museum is housed in a gorgeous wooden building that offers stunning views of the Venta waterfall (Ventas rumba). The exhibits are spread over three floors and include a replica of a fully furnished home. Also worth checking out are Riezupe Sand Caves, the longest underground cave labyrinth in Latvia that can be explored to a depth of two kilometres.
