Kolkata does it again! Ranked safest city in the country for the second time

Kolkata, the City of Joy, now has another reason to cheer. It has been crowned as India’s safest city for the second year in a row. Kolkata grabbed the numero uno spot owing to the lowest rate of offences recorded in the city.

As per the latest reports of the 2018 National Crime Records Bureau, Kolkata has scored 152.2, on a scale that measures known recorded offences per lakh people. Kolkata is closely followed by Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai on the said list of safest cities in the country.
The report, however, doesn’t give full marks to West Bengal in terms of its overall performance. It claims Bengal to be the fourth most violence-prone state, with the crime rate recorded at 46.1.
However, Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma said focused attention of the state government toward creating infrastructure and additional manpower, creation of new police stations, upgrade of vigilance, both human and technological, among other things have helped greatly in the prevention and detection of crime. He also said that while these numbers give them confidence, it also raises the bar. He assured that Kolkata will continue to remain the safest city in the country and that Kolkata Police will move ahead strongly with the motto, “We Care, We Dare”.
The state managed to perform better in the case of preventing crime against women, and slipped to the 10th position in rapes.

Kolkata’s report card was tainted as it featured on the list of only three cities to record acid attacks in 2018, along with Delhi and Chennai, as per the reports of National Crime Records Bureau.
