Kaup (Kapu in Kannada) is a small village near Udupi and is located just about 40 km away from Mangalore. Kaup beach is more popular because of the lighthouse located here. Visitors can go up the light house for a small fee and get panoramic view of the sea. This lighthouse was built over a century ago to warn sailors about the rocky coastline. It is still operational and visitors can get a closer view of the high intensity lamps used in the light house. Public transportation is available to Kaup and autos can be hired for last few kilometres from main road till beach.
Kaup beach can be reached from the Mangalore Airport, which is the nearest to this place. From here you will have to go by road. Also, the nearest railway station is at Udupi, and Mangalore. You can reach Kaup from Udupi by driving for just 25 km. Many people also happen to com to Kaup beach by road, as it is close to some of the major towns and cities, such as Bengaluru (410 km), Manipal (15 km), Mangalore (45 km), and Udupi (12 km).
Tourists coming to Kaup beach will be delighted to find ruins of Jain Basadis littered across the stretch of the beach, and as well as the Hindu temples of Goddess Mariamman. Numerous students from Manipal come here every year for holidaying; it is one of the prime attractions for students and tourists of the region. There is nothing much to do here really, except to languidly stroll across the stretch of sand, and enjoy the sweeping views of the sea. You will feel like you are in a paradise, and the waves rolling at your feet has a therapeutic effect here.
This lesser known beach is something right out of movies, mainly due to its striking beauty, and is also known as one of the best places to see the Arabian Sea. Perhaps one of the best things to do here to sit back and watch the splendid sunset and as the dwindling light reflects on water, you would know that this is what paradise looks like. There are some accommodations near the beach, and here you can find numerous budget and mid-range hotels.
