Kashmir lakes that are stunning beyond imagination
Kashmir, the Heaven on Earth, is a natural paradise brimming with magnificent mountains, enchanting valleys and mesmerising lakes. The lakes in Kashmir are recognised across the globe for their beauty and natural surroundings. These lakes are every traveller’s dream. Here are some of the incredible lakes in Kashmir that you should never miss out on visiting.
Dal Lake
Dal Lake needs no introduction as it is the most famous lake in the country. Set in the middle of Srinagar, Dal actually is a combination of three lakes, which makes it look like a maze. The houseboats, floating islands, and the mountain surrounding it just add to the romantic side of the lake. Dal Lake is not just any tourist attraction but it’s an unforgettable experience.
Wular Lake
Around two hours drive from Srinagar, Wular Lake in Bandipora district is Asia’s one of the largest freshwater lakes. Spread over 130 sq km, this lake is not only beautiful but also offers flood protection to the Kashmir Valley. Tourists flock the place during peak monsoon months as it gets all the more pretty.
Surinsar and Mansar Lakes
For an admirer of nature, Surinsar and Mansar Lakes are perfect abodes. These lakes are peaceful and serene, and offer visitors the best Kashmir experience. If you are visiting Kashmir in summers, make sure you come here as these lakes get covered in lotus flowers and look absolutely incredible.
Nigeen Lake
While Dal Lake might get a little touristy and noisy, Nigeen or Nagin Lake in Kashmir offers the much needed solitude and peace. This is the perfect place to be for an authentic lake-life experience in Kashmir. Enveloped by tall mountains and deep valleys, this lake in Kashmir has floating markets and boathouses that one can book for long stays.
Gadsar Lake
Gadsar or Yemsar Lake is a picturesque, alpine high altitude lake in Ganderbal district of Kashmir, nearly 28 km from Sonamarg. Set at an elevation of 3600 m above sea level, this is also one of the highest lakes in Kashmir. Calling it a hidden beauty of Kashmir won’t be wrong. One can reach the lake via alpine trek.
