Let’s delve into the fascinating world of Tristan da Cunha.
Location
Tristan da Cunha being a British Overseas Territory has its own constitution. However, there is no airstrip on the main island; and one can only reach here (in and out) by boat, which is another six-day trip from South Africa.
Tristan da Cunha itself is a volcanic island with a prominent volcanic peak called Queen Mary's Peak (6765 ft above sea level).
History
In 1816 a group of British soldiers came here with some civilians, including children and women. They lived on Tristan da Cunha to prevent the rescue of Napoleon Bonaparte from Saint Helena. When things were fine, a few soldiers and civilians decided to make the island their home.
Because of the remoteness of the place, the islands here are home to some unique flora and fauna. The place is a haven for wildlife lovers and researchers alike. Unique plant species, like the megaherbs are found on the Inaccessible Island. These plants have adapted to the harsh volcanic landscape.
So, if you ever plan a trip to this remote island, you’ll find yourself surrounded with a sense of calm. This is the place where time seems to stand still, and the spirit of self exploration begins.
