The name Jatayu is derived from the mythical bird creature from the Indian epic Ramayana. According to Hindu mythology, Jatayu was a noble vulture-like bird who valiantly fought to rescue Sita, the wife of Rama, from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. Although Jatayu fought bravely, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and fell on the rocky terrain of Chadayamangalam, where the Earth's Centre now stands. The site is believed to be where Lord Rama, in gratitude for Jatayu's sacrifice, blessed the bird, which adds a spiritual significance to the location.
