About Samba
Samba, with its scenic natural beauty, historic sites, and vibrant culture, offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and from the touristy hubs in Kashmir. One of the prime attractions of the place is its age-old tradition of Calico printings.
An introduction to Calico painting
Today, the legacy of 'Calico printing' is being preserved by five Self-Help Groups (SHGs) comprising a total of 50 members. These groups are dedicated to safeguarding the traditional techniques and promoting the artistry of 'Calico printing'. In an effort to rejuvenate this age-old craft, members of these SHGs, particularly young women, have innovatively incorporated 'Calico printing' onto jute bags, infusing them with a newfound charm and allure.
Tourists visiting Samba have the opportunity to witness the beauty of these block printings firsthand, exploring the hidden gems tucked away in its quaint villages and markets. Local artisans welcome visitors into their workshops, where they can observe the painstaking process of creating these intricate masterpieces and even try their hand at painting under their guidance.
Now let's have a look at some of the prominent attractions in Samba:
Samba Fort: Perched atop a hill overlooking the town, Samba Fort is a historic landmark that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Built during the reign of the Dogra rulers, this centuries-old fort showcases exquisite architecture and intricate craftsmanship.
Purmandal: Purmandal, also known as Chhota Kashi, is a sacred pilgrimage site located just 30 km from Samba. This revered destination is home to a cluster of ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
So next time when you are in Kashmir, make sure to visit Samba, a beautiful place still waiting to be explored!
