Han Jiang Ancestral Temple

The Han Jiang Ancestral Temple stands out in George Town as one with a simple yet visually appealing facade. In fact, the temple’s facade might force you to stop in your tracks to click pictures as you walk in this Penang’s famous neighborhood of Lebuh Chulia. The white exteriors lend a beautiful contrast to the dark coloured doors, pillars and characteristic red and golden lanterns. The interiors however are done in the traditional ornate manner with decorations and carvings.
It is said that Teochew people left their homeland in China to avoid a potentially disastrous series of civil wars and settled in many parts of Southeast Asia, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia. Since then, they have worked hard to establish themselves and are now a flourishing community. The temple, built in 19th century to serve migrants to Penang, has a plaque for deceased Teochew people. The religious site is dedicated to the Teochew patron deity, the Taoist God of the North. Also referred to as Xuánwǔ or the Dark Warrior, He is revered by martial artists.

Tips: Han Jian Ancestral Temple is located on Chulia Street and is open between 9 AM and 5 PM on weekdays (Monday–Friday).
