An island in the middle of the largest freshwater lake in Nicaragua that boasts two impressive volcanoes, Isla de Ometepe welcomes visitors with its friendly hospitality, wide beaches and exceptional accommodations. Concepcion and Maderas, the two volcanoes, offer ample opportunity for hiking, provided that you are in excellent physical shape. Other activities worth doing on this island include kayaking, wildlife spotting, petroglyph viewing and spending time on the expansive beaches. Getting here requires visitors to first make their way to San Jorge near Rivas, where they then catch a boat or a ferry over to the island. La Via Verde is one of the best places to stay on the island as this organic farm/bed and breakfast offers superior rooms, food and exceptional views of the volcanoes. Ometepe has a great reputation in regards to the safety of travellers and it is easy to spend an entire week here exploring different areas as well as wildlife and flora. From swimming at the natural spring to tours of the coffee reserves to hiking up to the waterfalls, this island is loaded with outdoor adventures.
