Govardhan to be developed as a tourism destination

K J Alphons, the Union Minister of State for Tourism, recently mentioned that Govardhan or Goverdhan, a prime pilgrimage centre for Indians in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, will soon be developed as a top-notch tourism destination. Situated about 25 km from Mathura, Govardhan is considered a revered site by the Hindus, who associate it with Lord Krishna.
The minister announced that the Central Government has sanctioned INR 50 crores for the development of the place as first instalment. He said that Govardhan will be made into one of the finest tourism spots in the country. The destination has already a part of Krishna Circuit in Mathura under the central government’s 'Swadesh Darshan Yojana' scheme.

Alphons also informed that INR 25.75 crores would be given for the construction of a multi-level parking that would be able to accommodate around 300 vehicles, while INR 3 crores would be provided for the renovation of Sur Kuti Parasauli-based 'Maharas' venue.
Besides this, INR 8 crores would be spent on the development of light and sound system at Kusum Sarovar and INR 3 crore on the renovation of Mansi Ganga. While on the site visit, the minister also praised the architectural exquisiteness of Kusum Sarovar.

Being associated with the Hindu Lord Krishna, there are various interesting places to visit in Govardhan. Some essential visits here are Govardhan Hill, Haridev Mandir, Cenotaph of Maharaj Ramkishan Ji, Sankarshan Kund and Gulal Kund, among others.
