Gornergrat

Yet another gateway to the magnificence of the Swiss Alps, Gornergrat, at 3089 m is one of the most popular excursions in Switzerland. Offering a view of 29 peaks that stand as tall at 4000 m, including the intimidating Matterhorn, Gornergrat Bahn is supposed to be an eco-friendly railway system equipped with every imaginable modern technology. Interestingly, it was the world’s first electrified cog railway. It is also home to Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the highest hotel in Europe.
Watch the peaks in all their glory from the perpetually sunny observation platform while sipping on a warm beverage or you could even get souvenir pictures with some adorable Saint Bernards. Since the views also include a slice of the Italian Alps, Gornergrat is a delight that absolutely must not be missed.
You can alight on Europe’s highest open air cog-railway from Zermatt station which will then bring you to the summit. The many lakes and boulders, meadows and tunnels, pine forests and bridges that greeted me on my way made me feel like I was a part of a Yash Chopra magnum opus. The journey lasts about 40 minutes and the climb is almost vertical so expect some dizziness amalgamated with a whole lot of thrill. Visit their official website for timetables and prices.
