Earth pyramids

There are several examples of earth pyramids, also known as fairy chimneys, in South Tyrol. In Bolzano area alone, these can be seen in at least three locations—Auna di Sotto, Soprabolzano and Monte di Mezzo. The ones in Monte di Mezzo are quite picturesque with fragile pinnacles emerging from the middle of the forest and the Dolomites forming the background. From the main road, it’s a short and easy hike to this place; ask the locals about the exact location, and if they don’t speak English, then use the German word Erdpyramiden.
The earth pyramids are geological formations created by the natural action of weathering. On top of the soft layer of the clay, there were originally big, hard stones that were not touched by the action of wind and rain. As millennia passed, the land was eroded, but not below the stones that were offering protection to the soft land, creating the pinnacles that we see today. If you are wondering if the stones are going to fall or not, then consider this fact that they are estimated to be standing there for over 25,000 years now! If it happens though, the pyramid is going to disappear in the blink of an eye.

Besides, many of you might not have heard of something like this, but it is actually a common phenomenon with many examples around the world. In Bolzano, these are all found at close distance from the city, but at higher altitude on the Renon plateau, easily accessible by public buses.
