Dlouha 16 is yet another address in Prague where Franz Kafka rented a room for a short period. He lived there from 1915 till early 1917. A wonderful example of the Art Nouveau style of architecture, this apartment building of the ‘Golden Pike’ was constructed by Karel Janda, a Czech architect, during the years 1911 till 1914.If the letters Kafka wrote to his fiancée Felice Bauer are to be believed, he was exceptionally dissatisfied with his fifth floor room owing to the fact that it was perpetually noisy due to the elevator. He also wrote about the thin ceilings and his neighbours, the servant girl and the sounds of the piano. Additionally, the ground floor of the establishment was then home to a printing store and a pub. During his stay, Kafka barely produced any literary works and was constantly on the lookout for better and more modest places to stay. He finally got over his creative hiatus while living with his sister in her humble cottage situated in the Golden Lane.
Dlouha 16 is located in Staré Město or the Old Town of Prague. The nearest metro station is Staroměstská and in case you decide to take the tram, lines 17, 18 and 53 are out there to help you commute.
