The ancient curse of Draupadi
The curse of Draupadi became a part of the region’s oral history, and over time, the Chambal River grew to be seen as a place of foreboding. Unlike other rivers in India that are venerated and have numerous temples along their banks, Chambal remained shunned by pilgrims. Local villagers, out of respect and fear for Draupadi's curse, avoid worshiping its waters in the same manner as the Ganga or Yamuna.
