Delhi International Airport installs facial recognition system for a 3-month trial

Delhi International Airport is reportedly going to begin facial recognition system trials, in collaboration with Vistara Airlines. The three-month trial of the Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel Experience is going to be held at the T3 Terminal of the Delhi International Airport. The facial recognition system will eventually be introduced to all the terminals of the Delhi airport.
The facial recognition at T3 is going to permit passenger entry, and has been installed at various check-points in the airport. These include airport entry, entry for security, and also at the boarding point for the aircraft. The process is going to start with passengers showing their valid flight tickets and government ID proofs at the registration kiosk; their facial details will then be captured by a camera, while the documents produced by the passengers would be checked by CISF personnel at the kiosk.


Finally, passengers would be permitted to move towards the departure gates. This gate will then have the passengers’ facial details already fitted in the system, thus the gate will open up automatically. After this, passengers can head to the check-in counters to drop their baggage, and then to the security-check gates. These gates would also have the facial recognition system fitted within it.
It is important to note here that the airport will not be storing any passengers data for long periods of time. The data will only be in the system until departure.

The facial recognition system is an initiative that has been set up with technical support from the Vision Box, a Portuguese software company.
