Shantadurga Temple complex in Fatorpa is one of the grandest holy places in Goa. Spread over many acres, the spectacular design and architecture of this edifice and its surroundings is worth to simply stand still and admire. The area hosts two main temples: Shantadurga of Cuncolim (also spelled as Kunkali) and Shantadurga of Fatorpa. Please refer to the travel guide for Exploring Salcete to learn more about the temple and history of Shantadurga Kunkalikarin (of Kunkali or Cuncolim).Temples in Goa have a shared history of moving from their original location. While persecution by Portuguese has been the primary reason for most, Shantadurga Fatarpekarin (of Fatorpa) suffered a similar fate during the reign of a Muslim ruler Bahmani Sultanate Allahuddin Hassan Gangu. The loot and arson of Hindu temples continued for 14 years during this time. Many Turks and Arabs, who accompanied the king, harassed the local community. In 1365 CE, Hindus rescued the idol and moved to a picturesque village called Morpirla. The idol was eventually moved further north to its present location in Fatorpa in 1500 CE.
Undoubtedly one of the most popular in Goa, Goddess Shantadurga, or more commonly Goddess Santeri, is the patron deity or Kul Devi of many families. Her worshipers believe her to be the one who settles quarrels and move people towards peace.
