This year, the Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) is being celebrated with a lot of caution. As the deadly coronavirus spreads in China, and makes its advent into foreign shores, Chinese authorities shut down major tourist attractions in the country, including parts of the Great Wall of China. The death toll rises to 42, and as many as 1409 confirmed cases of coronavirus affected individuals have been reported up until now.
China’s Juyongguan Great Wall Scenic Area has now been shut. It is part of the Great Wall, and is close to Beijing. Along with this, the Yinshan Pagoda Forest, and Ming Tombs have also been shut as of today.
Furthermore, in a statement, Disney said that in response to the prevention and control of the coronavirus outbreak, Disneyland is also shutting down as of now. This includes the Walt Disney Grand Theatre, and Wishing Star Park.
The venue for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Bird’s Nest Stadium, was also shut last week. Alongside famous temples such as the famous Lama Temple of Beijing, the Forbidden City (which is packed during the Lunar New Year) has also been shut down. The Bird’s Nest Stadium is set to remain closed until January 30, 2020. The capital city is doing all it can to help contain the outbreak, and thus such measures are being swiftly taken in China.
Reports also suggest that McDonald’s has suspended its operations in five cities of China, namely, Wuhan, Huanggang, Qianjing, Xiantao, and Wuhan. Seven movies that were to open this weekend have also been cancelled or postponed.
