Coronavirus update—India closes Kartarpur Corridor and borders in the east

In view of the current situation related to the Coronavirus outbreak, the Government of India has closed the Kartarpur Corridor indefinitely. The order comes into place from the midnight of March 16. This means that travellers cannot go to the Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan until further notice. According to reports, Punjab has reported only one case of Coronavirus until now.
Sources said that the step has been taken to contain further spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease. The Kartarpur Corridor is around 4.1 km long, and connects two important Sikh shrines. On the Indian side is the Dera Baba Nanak, while the Pakistan side has the Kartarpur shrine. The corridor was recently opened for pilgrims.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the government has also suspended movements through immigration Land Check Posts at various borders. This includes Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. Moreover, the famous Attari-Wagah border was also shut on Friday evening, which means that foreign nationals will not be permitted to enter into India from that border. However, Indians who had gone to Pakistan through the border can return before their visas expire.
A few specified border checkposts are, however, still open. According to reports, 20 checkposts in eight Indian states are still open. Assam has three checkposts that are still open, two of which are with Bangladesh, and one with Bhutan. West Bengal, on the other hand, has nine checkposts still open, out of which seven are with Bangladesh, one with Bhutan, and one with Nepal.
