Mary, the mother of Jesus, is known by many titles. In relation to the sorrows in her life, Our Lady of Piety (or Nossa Senhora de Piedade) is one of these titles and the main altar in this chapel is dedicated to her. This chapel is situated in isolation, as if abandoned, with a large ground in front, bound by a few trees. The main gate is closed most of the time and it is best to try your luck at 8:30 AM on Sunday mornings, the day when mass service is organized in Konkani language. It is worth a visit even on other days though, since the hilly walk or drive is soothing and from that vantage point, you could see good views of the city. Here's a tip: Monte Hill is popularly known as Moti Dongor. So, if you are seeking directions from the locals, ask for Moti Dongor. To visit the chapel, you need to head north from the town center, going past the cemetery and the famous landmark of Hospicio Hospital to your right. You would see a flight of stairs going up with a mural painting. Climb these steps up to get to the site. If you are driving, go past and turn right towards a street called Calcada de Nossa Senhora de Piedade (a sign board shows an arrow towards Monte Nossa Senhora de Piedade) and admire the apartments and large Goan-style houses, most of these with huge courtyards. From the town center, it is an easy walk of 20-30 minutes or a drive or 15 minutes.
