China to construct its first undersea tunnel for high-speed trains

For the first time ever in its history, China, one of the largest nations in the world, has planned to build the underwater tunnel for high-speed trains. The tunnel will connect two cities located in the eastern province of Zhejiang. As per the media reports, the upcoming undersea tunnel will reduce the travel time from 90 to 30 minutes.
Reportedly, the undersea water tunnel is estimated to be 16.2 km long, and it will link Ningbo city with Zhoushan, an island city in east Zhejiang. The trains are made to run at a speed of 250 km per hour. Therefore, the duration of the trip that would last 1.5 hours will be cut down to merely 30 minutes once the underwater train goes on track.


The high-speed rail lines in China cover 25,000 km of the area which is more than sixty per cent of the world’s total. News has it that Zhejiang was the first few provinces in China to build high-speed rail. Meanwhile, China is on a high-speed rail boom in order to boost its existing infrastructure for economic development. If all goes well, this project might also encourage tourism. Reportedly, the fastest train in the world is Shanghai Maglev which runs at a speed of 267 mph.
