Residing on both sides of the Mexico-US border, the Chihuahuan Desert or El Despoblado (the unpeopled land) is North America's largest desert. It incorporates several mountain ranges and a great deal of scrubland, bounded by the Sierra Madre Mountains and varying between lower, warmer regions along the Rio Grande and cooler, mountainous sections. It has a comparatively balanced climate and a wide range of fauna, particularly in El Carmen's Big Bend National Park, its most sizable stretch of protected ground. Local legend has it that after the world had been completed, god threw the remaining pieces here, which appear quite plausible considering the breathtaking, intermingled scenery—waterfalls, extinct volcanoes and vast canyons coexist within just a few miles of each other.
