Calacali

The much older and much smaller monument of Mitad Del Mundo was designed by geographer Luis Tufino in 1936. The first monument was built in memory of the mission of French Academy of Sciences that was led by Louis Godin and two others in his team, Pierre Bouguer and Charles Marie de La Condamine, in the year 1736. The monument that used to exist before the current one has been moved to a small town which is 7 km away, called Calacalí. The rural parish, sandwiched between two volcanoes, i.e., Casitagua Volcano in the northwest and Pululagua Volcano in Pichincha in the southwest, Quito is home to the original equator monument. It is located in the central square of the town. It may not be as imposing and celebrity-like as the second monument, but it is the original.
