Batu caves

Located just North of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is a limestone hill housing ancient caves. It is the main site for Hindu pilgrimage in the area. The largest of the three caves is called Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave, which houses more than 100 years old ornate Hindu shrines. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Murugan. Entrance to Batu Caves is adorned with a large golden statue of Lord Murugan. Theses caves are an important religious landmark for Hindus in Malaysia. Thousands of devotees descend upon Batu Caves during the annual celebrations of Hindu festival of Thaipusam at the end of January. The caves are accessed by climbing 272 steps up the hill; many disciples make this arduous journey carrying special ‘Kavadis’ on their shoulders, to fulfil their vows to the gods. Batu Caves is also a great spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. There are more than 100 defined climbing routes, which are great for obtaining basic climbing skills. Whether you are inclined towards the religious heritage or towards getting some adrenaline rush through the climbing adventure, Batu Caves is worth visiting for its natural pristine surroundings!
