Not all Indian cities are gas chambers, at least that’s what the data collected by the recent Swachh Survekshan 2017 survey says. So, if you have been facing the task of choosing where you want to go for your next vacation, forget throwing some darts at a mental map, and instead head to India’s cleanest city.
The second runner up is the coastal port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, which is followed by Surat in Gujarat. Mysuru in Karnataka has lost its first position this year, coming down to the fifth place in the list. This is the second survey carried out by the Modi Government to assess the Swachh Bharat Mission or Clean India mission in 434 cities across India.

Naidu expressed joy for the cities that have made it to the list, and at the same time sounded concerned for Uttar Pradesh, which is India's most populated state and has now come on the radar for its most polluted city called Gonda. "We are all going there tomorrow for discussions. The state is big, the challenge is big. We have decided to focus on that," the minister told an assembly of reporters at a press conference today.
The survey involved people from across the country being asked to vote on the basis of several questions printed on a feedback form. The government said that around 80 per cent people have said that there is an improvement in cleanliness over the past two years in their cities. The final result has been decided using an independent assessment score, data submitted by the local bodies about sanitation and cleanliness work and the feedback submitted by the people.
