Barbican

Warsaw’s Barbican or fort was built in 1548 and is located where Old Town merges with New Town, or as a demarcating line. It originally served the purpose of a gate to Old Town and surrounded the same. History has it that it was completed sometime during the 16th century, but had taken over two centuries to be fully constructed. While there are still some structures around, much of the fort walls are in ruins. However, it is evident from the remains that the fort was once an imposing structure. It did suffer extensive damages during World War II and the Warsaw Uprising but large parts have been reconstructed.
