Kushinagar is an ancient town having great religious value. Barely 320 km from Lucknow, it’s one of the four main pilgrimage centres for Buddhists, the others being Lumbini (Nepal), Bodhgaya and Sarnath. Kushinagar is where Buddha took his last breath. Kushinagar is an ancient town having great religious value. It’s one of the four main pilgrimage centres for Buddhists, the others being Lumbini (Nepal), Bodhgaya and Sarnath. Kushinagar is where Buddha took his last breath. There are numerous temples that you can visitto understand Buddhism as a religion. Visitors can see several ruined stupas that date back to 3rd century to 5th century. The most significant places to visit in Kushinagar include the beautiful and historic Ramabhar Stupa (where Buddha is believed to have been cremated), Nirvana Chaitya ( the main Stupa), the Wai Thai complex and Indo-Japan-Sri Lanka Temple are must see. The Mahaparinirvana Temple houses a beautiful 5th-century statue of reclining Buddha and an ancient stupa, while the Buddha Museum displays a good collection of Buddhist sculptures and relics, Tibetan thangka paintings and Mughal miniatures.
