Architectural marvels of Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh boasts of being one of the country’s finest repositories of architectural wonders. A number of monuments here are still untouched, and stand strong to depict early life and culture. If you are a history buff, these places should definitely feature in your itinerary.
Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho
It is the tallest, largest, and the most ornate temple among the surviving temples at Khajuraho. Khajuraho Group of Monuments is popular for its elaborate cravings and striking sculptures; out of all the temples, Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the most popular one. It opens for visitors from 6 AM and remains accessible till 10 PM.
Jahangir Mahal, Orchha
It’s a must-visit for history lovers and reflects the rich heritage of Bundela kings. The structure is primarily associated with the brave Bundela kings of the 10th and 16th century. This monument is built in lime mortar and, unlike modern buildings, has a more porous surface. Therefore, the structure undergoes considerable changes as the season changes. As per the records, King Bir Deo built the Jahangir Mahal to welcome Emperor Jahangir during his one-day stay in Orchha. It is a three-storied building that features a fountain in the centre.
Sanchi Stupas, Sanchi
It’s one of the earliest examples of temple architecture. As per the records, the evolution of temple architecture can be witnessed in the Gupta temple, which you can find in the stupa premises. The structure features four gateways, and takes us through Buddha’s life through the intricate carvings. The numerous temples, stupas, and an Ashokan pillar have remained the primary focus of interest for years. UNESCO has also accredited the status of the World Heritage Site to the Mahastupa.
Jai Vilas Palace, Gwalior
This palace was built in the 19th century in Gwalior. It showcases European architecture in detail, and was built by Sir Michael Filose. The palace is a combination of architectural styles. You get to witness that the first storey depicts Tuscan style, whereas the second is Italian-Doric, and the third features Corinthian. Popular for its famous Durbar Hall, a visit to this place is a must when you are in Gwalior.
Ship Palace (Jahaz Mahal), Mandu
Situated between two artificial lakes, this architectural wonder got this name as it appears as a ship floating in water. It served the purpose of harem for the sultan, and was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Khalji. Also, Mandu is an ancient city that is located in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh, and deserves all the tourist attention for its numerous architectural wonders.
